For 11 years, the annual CGAP Photo Contest has sought out original and striking images that demonstrate the impact of financial inclusion around the world. This year's contest looked to capture the evolving landscape of financial inclusion and specifically invited submissions in four key areas:

  • Women's economic empowerment;
  • Resilience;
  • Small businesses.

Unfortunately, most development interventions, including microfinance and livelihood development programs, have not addressed the needs of the extreme or ultra-poor because these populations tend to be the hardest to serve: they are socially and geographically isolated, own few or no assets, have limited livelihood prospects, and often suffer from poor health.

Based on the interim findings presented in this research, Ford Foundation and CGAP designed an ambitious strategy to reach out to government policy makers to help them understand the potential of the Graduation Approach to serve large numbers of extremely poor people develop sustainable livelihoods and move into the market economy over time.
