EDITOR'S PICK
Social Performance Task Force, Nov 2016

There are 21.3 million people registered as refugees with UN agencies. Many of them appear to be eligible for access to financial services, but FSPs overlook them. Here is what you may not know about refugees:
  • Refugees are less transitory than most people imagine. Six in ten refugees have been in protracted displacement for more than 10 years.
  • The majority of refugees do not live in camps. Only about one-third of refugees currently live in managed camps.
  • Refugees increasingly use technology. In Uganda, for example, more urban refugees (96%) than the national average (45%) use mobile phones.
  • There is a potential financial service market of at least 5.3 million working age refugees living in urban areas around the world. An additional estimated 2.8 million adult refugees live in densely populated camps.
